Key properties and ingredients
Active compounds: Genuine products generally contain bioactive components such as cordycepin (3′-deoxyadenosine), cordycepic acid (D-mannitol) and various polysaccharides.
Strains used: Many commercially available organic (BIO) food supplements use the laboratory-fermented Cordyceps sinensis CS-4 strain or cultivated Cordyceps militaris.
The use of cordyceps in Chinese medicine
- A tonic for Yang deficiency. In traditional Chinese medicine, Cordyceps, known by its Chinese name ‘Dong Chong Xia Cao’, falls into the category of ‘tonic herbs for Yang deficiency’. Tonic herbs are used in cases of deficiency, when one of the four elements (Qi, Blood, Yin and Yang) is lacking. Yang tonics are usually used in combination with small amounts of Yin tonics. This is because, when Yin is deficient, herbs intended solely to tonify Qi or Yang are not effective on their own. In Chinese medicine, the fundamental concept of health is the balance between Yin and Yang. Those with an excess of Cold in their bodies are said to have an excess of Yin (as Yin is cold in nature) or a deficiency of Yang (as Yang is hot in nature). Therefore, depending on your condition, cordyceps may help restore a harmonious balance between Yin and Yang (4). The most common symptoms associated with a deficiency of Yang are a lack of energy, low libido and impotence. It is worth noting that another very effective remedy for a deficiency of Yang is regular exercise.
- Warm in nature. Furthermore, Dong Chong Xia Cao is warm in nature. This means that cordyceps is used in cases where there is too much ‘Cold’ in the body. However, as cordyceps is warm in nature, it has a lesser effect in cases of ‘Cold’ than a herb that is hot in nature.
- Sweet in taste. Dong Chong Xia Cao tastes sweet. The so-called ‘Five-Phase Theory’ of Chinese medicine states that the taste of ingredients is the primary factor in how they function within the body. Sweet ingredients such as Dong Chong Xia Cao, or cordyceps, tend to slow down acute reactions and detoxify the body. They also have a tonifying effect, as they nourish Qi and Blood. Similarly, the flavour of ingredients also determines which organs and meridians they target. As such, Dong Chong Xia Cao is believed to target the kidneys and lungs. According to Chinese medicine, the kidneys not only regulate the urinary system, but also play a key role in the reproductive system and in the body’s growth and ageing processes. Similarly, the lungs are thought to be, in addition to respiration, a key part of the production chain of Qi and the body’s nourishing fluids.
