With excellent moisturising properties, organic/black sesame oil is well known for its many uses. Sesame oil contains 82% unsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid, which helps prevent heart disease. It is rich in antioxidants, with ample vitamin E and A content. Like seeds, it is rich in calcium and iron, but also contains magnesium, zinc and copper. Unlike many other oils, sesame oil contains lecithin, which supports brain function and helps to improve skin and nail health.

In Indian folk medicine, sesame is used to treat ‘cold’ diseases and to remove excess mucus and gases. It is very effective for lung and respiratory diseases: shortness of breath, dry cough, asthma. It is also used for heart, liver, biliary, pancreatic (including diabetes), thyroid and elevated stomach acid and anaemia. For colds and chronic respiratory diseases, it is applied to the chest and under the feet to aid recovery and resistance to illness. To improve hearing and prevent ear diseases, 2-3 drops are dripped in the ear. Sesame oil strengthens the gums and tooth enamel, prevents the formation and development of caries. The oil improves the strength of the voice, acts as an anti-inflammatory and soothing in cases of inflammation of the vocal cords.

Ideal for cooking – use as a seasoning for salads, stews, rice dishes and light frying (temperature 215 C). The paste with chickpeas makes hummus.
