Adaptogenic medicinal plants

The term ‘adaptogen’ or ‘adaptogenic medicinal plant’ refers to a pharmacological concept, which means that following their administration, the body’s physiological processes stabilise and homeostasis – that is, the body’s biochemical balance – improves, whilst the cells’ tolerance to stress also increases.

Adaptogens promote the production of biological stimulants in the body (interferon, interleukin, etc.). Those involved in herbal medicine refer to certain medicinal plants as ‘adaptogens’, emphasising their ability to prolong life, boost libido and enhance well-being. The term ‘adaptogen’ refers to naturally occurring substances that regulate metabolism, enhancing the body’s ability to adapt to environmental factors and prevent them from causing harm to the body.

Plants that have been thoroughly studied and on whose effects a consensus has been reached are:

  • American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius),
  • Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng),
  • Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus),
  • ashwagandha root (Withania somnifera),
  • Chinese caterpillar fungus (Cordyceps sinensis),
  • hairy codonopsis (Codonopsis pilosula),
  • liquorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra, G. uralensis),
  • marali root (Rhaponticum carthamoides),
  • rose-scented golden root (Rhodiola rosea),
  • milk vetch (Astragalus membranaceus),
  • Chinese magnolia vine (Schisandra chinensis),
  • capsa (Physalis peruviana),
  • maca root (Lepidium meyenii),
  • aloe,
  • tea leaf,
  • birch catkins,
  • pollen,
  • royal jelly,
  • propolis (bee resin).

The main effects of adaptogens:

  • increase physical and mental endurance and performance
  • protect against the harmful effects of radiation
  • reduce the side effects of chemotherapy
  • reduce the incidence of illness
  • increase resistance to chemical carcinogens

Adaptogens may be used as a treatment or as part of a treatment programme for stress and exposure to stressors (such as high altitudes, intensive training, etc.), in cases of chronic illness and fatigue, to support recovery following treatment, during chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and to enhance physical and mental performance.
